Accessibility of the NL´s collections according to groups of call numbers.common

General rules

Most of the documents published or created before 1800 (inclusive) are in the custody of the Department of Manuscripts and Old Prints (hereinafter referred to as "ORST").

Documents of a bohemian nature published from 1801 to 1900 (inclusive) are preferably included in the Conservation Fund of Bohemian Production of the 19th Century (abbreviated as the 19th Century Fund) and are made available in the Hostivař Study Room; orders can be placed through the Advisory and Information Service in the Main Hall.

If only archival copies are attached to the bibliographic record of a document in the electronic catalogue, it is recommended to check the existence of other copies in the scanned catalogues of the National Library of the Czech Republic (RetrIS ). Not valid for documents of domestic production of the 19th century - see above.

AUDIO-VIDEO
Standard ordering

  • first of all, search and order in the electronic catalogue

  • if the search in the catalogue is not successful, we recommend consulting the scanned NL CR catalogues (RetrIS)
Electronic document
  • making available in the Social and Natural Sciences Reading Room
  • authorised registered users can borrow documents marked in the electronic catalogue "for 30 days" off-site
  • if the main content of the document is a computer program, it may not be made available
  • some documents can no longer be accessed for technical reasons; the user is informed of this fact by email
HOSTIVAŘ

  • delivery on working days
    - orders placed before 12:00  - available after 14:00
    - orders placed after 12:00 - available the next working day after 10:00

  • orders placed at the weekend (including public holidays) are delivered after 10:00 on the next working day

  • making available in the General Reading Room (for authorised registered users also in the Scholars' Reading Room).

  • off-site loan is only possible if the electronic catalogue indicates "FOR 30 DAYS / for 30 days"; items for off-site loan should be collected exclusively in the Main Hall

  • for foreign book documents published after 1951 (inclusive), which
    - are not listed in the electronic catalogue and were found in one of the scanned NL CR catalogues (RetrIS) or
    - are listed in the electronic catalogue but with the note "delayed delivery"
    the admissibility of off-site loans is determined by the librarian only after the item has been delivered; in any case, before the check-out, the information about the item must be stored in the electronic catalogue - the item is then available later

  • for foreign book documents from the year of publication 1951 (incl.), which
    - are not listed in the electronic catalogue and were found in one of the scanned NL CR catalogues (RetrIS) or
    - are listed in the electronic catalogue but with the note "delayed delivery"
    the admissibility of off-site loans is determined by the librarian only after the item has been delivered; in any case, before the check-out, the item data must be entered in the electronic catalogue - the item is then available later

ARCHIVAL COLLECTION OF THE BOHEMICAL PRODUCTION OF THE 19TH CENTURY
(abbreviated as 19th CENTURY COLLECTION)

An archival collection of documents published from 1801 to 1900 in the territory of the present-day Czech Republic, supplemented with foreign Bohemical literature.

ARCHIVAL COLLECTIONS HOSTIVAŘ

Archival collection of thematic parts: address books, calendars, militaria, annual reports of Czech and German schools and dissertations defended at domestic universities and colleges. Personal libraries of important Czech personalities and bibliophiles. Also periodicals in German and Hungarian published until 1945 in the territory of the present-day Czech Republic or former Czechoslovakia.
Microdocument

NATIONAL ARCHIVAL COLLECTION (NKF)

An archival collection of documents published from 1901 to the present on the territory of the Czech Republic (or Czechoslovakia), supplemented by foreign bohemians. The collection has a strictly preservation character.

  • library units from the NKF are only made available if:
    - there is no other library unit available in the NCF,
    - the document is not available in the holdings of other libraries throughout the Czech Republic and it is not possible to make it available through the interlibrary loan service; or
    - its content is not available in digital form or on another medium
  • making available, in accordance with special rules, only in the Hostivař Reading Room
  • delivery within 3 days after placing the order
  • call +420 221 663 353 or write to studovnacdh@nkp.cz to check if the unit is ready for study
  • audio and electronic documents will be available in the Social and Natural Sciences Reading Room in the Klementinum
    - the user will receive a message about the availability of the unit for studying to the e-mail address they have entered in the registration form
    - if the address is not provided, it is advisable to check whether the unit is ready by calling +420 221 663 146 or by email at sspv@nkp.cz

  • for ordering RF (except RF Z), Za and Zc call numbers it is possible to contact the service in the reading room
ORST (Department of Manuscript and Early Printed Books - Reading Room)
  • first of all, search and order in the electronic catalogue, in the STT database
  • if the search in the electronic catalogue is negative, we recommend to go to the scanned catalogues of the National Library of the Czech Republic (RetrIS) and order via the electronic form
  • if the document in the ORST administration is available on an alternative medium or in a digital library, the original shall not be made available
  • making available the historical collection is governed by the ORST Reading Room Regulations (delivery on the next operating half-day)
  • manuscripts can be found in the Manuscriptorium digital library or in in printed catalogues and can be ordered separately here (https://retris.nkp.cz/Catalog?sigla=ABA001)

UN

If a user wishes to study exclusively a library item that the National Library of the Czech Republic has acquired as part of the depository collection of publications of the United Nations system, they can apply for access to it free of charge at the Counselling and Information Services desk in the Main Hall.

Reference Collection in Reading Room 

  • the item is part of the reading room's reference collection and is intended for on-site use only
  • it cannot be placed on hold in advance; it is either freely accessible on the shelf or available upon request at the service desk in the Reading Room
