Dedicated to materials analysis, multispectral research, monitoring of climatic conditions, contamination control and disinfection, and drying of water-damaged collections.
The NLCR laboratories conduct research and analysis of bookbinding materials. They monitor degradation factors, verify the effects of treatments and preservatives on the physical condition of library materials, and monitor and evaluate climatic parameters in depositories, study rooms, and exhibition spaces. In the microbiological laboratory, they test disinfectants and insecticides, perform microbiological checks of the library collection, and carry out individual or collective disinfection of affected documents. The laboratories operate a multi-purpose vacuum chamber for drying library materials and carry out specialised investigations of damaged texts and hidden defects using image analysis, multispectral imaging, and X-ray radiography. They also provide their services to other institutions managing library collections. The NLCR laboratories participate in numerous national and international research projects with many scientific outputs and publications.
