A database of Cataloging in Publication (CIP) records created prior to the publication of print or electronic books.

A cataloging-in-publication record (CIP record) is an abbreviated cataloging record written in ISBD format in accordance with the current international RDA rules, using national guidelines. It provides essential information about the publication from both a formal and content perspective. It is created based on data provided by the publisher shortly before the release of a print or electronic work. The publisher then publishes the completed record in the publication.

Instructions for processing the record are available on the CIP service website (click here: https://www.nkp.cz/sluzby/katalogizace-v-knize-cip). They include a list of required documents, without which the record cannot be created. The record is forwarded to the publisher within 48 hours (i.e., 2 business days) of receiving the supporting documents for processing. This is a free service that, among other things, allows for the verification of the accuracy of the submitted data and, if necessary, its correction prior to the publication of the work.

CIP is an international program for cooperation between publishers and libraries with a long-standing tradition. It was established in 1971 at the Library of Congress in the United States and has since expanded to other countries, where it is primarily administered by national libraries. In the Czech Republic, the CIP agency at the National Library of the Czech Republic was founded in 1992.
