Franz Joseph Haydn
(1732 – 1809)

Franz Joseph Haydn spent several years of his life (c. 1757-1761) in Bohemia at Dolní Lukavice (in Haydn’s time Dolejší Lukavec [Unter Lukawecz], near to Plzeň [Pilsen], the family estate of the Counts Morzin, who employed a music band there in the 18th century. One of its Kapellmeisters was Joseph Haydn, who composed his Symphony no. 1, D major (Hob. I: 1) in Dolní Lukavice.

In 1993, Haydn’s music returned to the Dolní Lukavice stately home with the first International Haydn Festival of Music, the main aim of which is historically informed performance of the works of Joseph and Michael Haydn and their contemporaries, as well as the music of the Baroque and early Romantic eras. The tenth festival will be held in nine venues of Plzeň County - Dolní Lukavice, Chotěšov, Chudenice, Dobřany, Klatovy, Nebílovy, Plzeň, Přeštice and Řenče. It will also include a Musicology Conference, this exhibition and a series of exhibitions dedicated to ‘Music and Flowers’.

The festival is a founder member of the Central European Festivals of Early Music Association (CEFEMA). It is held under the patronage of the Czech Commission for UNESCO and takes part in the United Nations Year of Cultural Heritage 2002.
