CODEX GIGAS - THE DEVIL'S BIBLE
The Secret of the World's Largest Book

Digital version (in the National Library of Sweden)

20th September 2007 - 6th January 2008

The exhibition features Codex gigas, also called The Devil´s Bible, which is considered to be the largest known manuscript in the world. It originated probably at the beginning of the 13th century but nothing is known about the origin itself. It was owned by a Benedictine Monastery of Podlažice near Chrudim, Bohemia. Later the codex passed to the famous collections of Emperor Rudolph II, where it was taken from as a war booty by Swedish troops in 1648.

Now, after more than 350 years, the manuscript returns to Bohemia - at least for a certain period - thanks to the kind loan from the National Library of Sweden.

The exhibition shows not only the original manuscript itself but also its contents and artistic features as well as its significance and function. Visitors will have the opportunity to follow the fortunes of the manuscript from its origin to its preservation in Sweden. The exhibition has been organised under the auspices of Prime Minister of the CR, Mirek Topolánek, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the CR, Karel Schwarzenberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden, Carl Bildt, Minister of Culture of the CR, Václav Jehlička, Ambassador of Sweden to the CR, H.E. Ms. Catherine von Heidenstam, Mayor of Prague, Pavel Bém and Ambassador of the CR to Sweden, H.E. Mrs. Marie Chatardové.
